Public Health England has published the latest Local Health Profiles reports for 2018. The report and data can be viewed on the Public Health England website.

Understanding the sociodemographic profile of an area is important when planning services. Different population groups may have different health and social care needs and are likely to interact with services in different ways. Some of the key findings for St. Helens are as follows:

- St. Helens has a higher proportion of older people (aged 65+) than the England average.
- St. Helens is one of the 20% relatively most deprived districts/unitary authorities in England, with approximately 21% (6,700) of children living in low income families.
- Life expectancy for both men and women is lower than the England average.
- Under 75 mortality rates due to cancer and cardiovascular diseases is higher than the England average.
- Almost 1/4 of Year 6 children are classified as obese, worse than the average for England. Excess weight (i.e. overweight or obese) in adults is also worse than the England average.
- The rate of alcohol-specific hospital stays among those under 18 is higher than the average for England.

However, positive messages include:

- Diabetes and Dementia diagnoses rates are significantly better than the England average.
- There are fewer people killed or seriously injured on roads in St. Helens than the England average.
- The number of people smoking in St. Helens has reduced in recent years and is now similar to the England average.
- Rate of diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections is better than the national average.
- Infant mortality rate is in line with the England average.
- Excess winter deaths are not significantly different to the England average.
